Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Ecuador hard, not only health-wise, but also socially, economically, and politically. Official statistics (which are far from reality) have exposed, through government authorities, that more than 85,000 people have been infected nationwide, killing more than 9,000 residents of our country. Those who understand this issue, the relatives of the deceased and those affected know that this number is far from reality. The objective of this research was to demonstrate mortality from COVID-19 has significantly impacted the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The region has 32.1% of the total deaths from COVID-19 reported in the world, since its population represents only 8.4% of the world population. The interrelationships between social class, gender, ethnicity and territory with mortality and its intermediate variables are complex. Recent studies have shown that with respect to COVID-19, in general, people in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability have higher risks of infection and death from COVID-19. Inequalities are related both to the ability to protect against contagion, as well as to the higher incidence of comorbidities that are associated with greater severity of the disease and eventually death. This study analyzes mortality and morbidity and mortality from COVID-19.
