Diagnostic tests and biochemical markers for COVID 19: usefulness and clinical significance

Abstract

The world is in the midst of a pandemic caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), associated with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, first reported in December 2019 in the province of Wuhan, China. Due to its rapid spread, there is a need for rapid and accurate diagnostics to better monitor the disease. The objective of this review was to describe and analyze the main laboratory methods used for the diagnosis of COVID-19, as well as the biochemical markers associated with the progression of the disease. To do this, a thorough PubMed search was performed using the following keywords: (COVID-19; SARS-CoV-2; serology, real-time PCR; methods; rapid tests; biomarkers). This review provides a clinical laboratory approach to the disease, bringing clarity to the growing body of diagnostic tests available and under development; as well as the understanding of the biochemical parameters that are altered during it. The identification of effective laboratory biomarkers capable of classifying patients according to their risk is essential to ensure timely treatment and serves as a guide for scientists, doctors, students and the general public.
